About St. Thomas
St. Thomas is the seat of Elgin County, about 30 km south of London down Wellington Road and Highway 4. The city grew around the railways, and it shows: the Talbot Street core, the neighbourhoods around Pinafore Park and the streets off Elm and Wilson are lined with early-1900s brick homes with steep gables, and the old station and Elevated Park sit right in the middle of it.
Around that core are the postwar subdivisions of the 1960s and 70s and, more recently, the growth on the east side near the new battery plant lands. So the roofs run from century homes with plank decking and multiple shingle layers, to bungalows on their third roof, to new builds with big cut-up roofs and lots of valleys.
The weather is London's, with a bit more lake influence from Erie to the south. Winters bring snow and freeze-thaw and the ice dams that go with older, under-insulated attics. Summer storms coming off the lake can be sharp.
