About Lucan

Lucan is about 25 km north of London on Highway 4, the main community of the Township of Lucan Biddulph. It is best known for the Donnelly story of the 1880s, and the village core along Main Street still has the brick homes and storefronts of that era. The Lucan Community Memorial Centre on Main Street is the village's gathering point.

The last twenty years brought steady growth, with new subdivisions on the south and west sides full of two-storey homes and bungalows, the oldest of which are now approaching their first replacement. Beyond the village, the flat farmland toward Granton, Clandeboye and Exeter is dotted with century farmhouses, barns and machine sheds. Older village homes frequently have additions with low-slope roofs that suit membrane, and the farm outbuildings are natural candidates for metal panels.

This is open, exposed country. Wind has nothing to slow it, snow drifts hard against buildings, and roofs carry a heavy load through the winter. Both point toward the manufacturer's high-wind shingle nailing and, on farms, metal roofs that shed the snow.
